Probably, you know the next thing about this post.
You're right. It's the SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect IP Act, where IP is "Intellectual Property") issue.
As a Computer Studies student and an enthusiastic internet user, this controversy is a big thing to me. I only knew about the issue yesterday, since it became such a trending topic on Facebook. Most of the pages I liked were posting about SOPA, so I decided to take a peek at it. God, that was the best thing to do, since I became aware of some fishy stuff going on around, which was threatening to put the whole Internet into a probable catastrophic condition. I've watched a few videos about SOPA, mostly contradicting the bill, and it was somewhat enough to convince me to take the side of opposition. However, I haven't fully researched about it, and haven't heard what the pro-SOPA people has to say. But with the uproar of many people, from ordinary to popular ones, it seems as if I do not need to hear what the other party has to state. I'm not saying I won't listen to their side, but as anyone knows, much of their "dirt" are already revealed around the internet.
My awareness all began with the image about the blackout of Wikipedia, which appeared on my Facebook Homepage. Thinking it was something trivial, I checked out Wikipedia myself, only to find the great significance of having knowledge of the current situation. I ignored researching about a local political issue and began typing questions, hoping to get answers.
I got linked to many, many websites searching about this debatable issue. I kinda browsed through the history and according to some of the references I cited to, the SOPA bill has been around since early 2000s, but was never processed, which, in my opinion, was caused by its extremely flawed content.
So it's all about copyrights and piracy. I'm young, and not so knowledgeable of what goes in the business industry, however, a few people's opinions raise my curiosity, so you could ignore my speculation about this issue. Does piracy really affect the economic status of these companies, after they've profited over millions with their products? Or are they just troubled because their extra money suddenly decreased? And, would their company be as known as it is, if not for the internet who turned their merchandise into international phenomenons? The internet, who they accuse of causing their income depletion, in contrary, is the one that contributes to their wealth. Piracy may only be a part of the culprit, is it really all to blame?
More rumors had been spreading as well. How true is it that these companies who complain are the ones who taught people to pirate their stuff in the first place?
That's all for my blabbing. You see, I'm a common citizen, though I know that I also have power. Simply bringing up this issue could raise awareness of our rights. I want answers too, for I have inquisitions, as much as everyone has. I hope that even this little blog post would pave its way to the awakening of the mind and the truth.
